What better to do during a pandemic than learn a new musical instrument? And if the chosen instrument happened to be one of the most popular for over two centuries with a huge, spectacular repertoire that can be played amongst friends as well as in concert, so much the better!
Les Voix humaines was delighted to be awarded grants from both the Conseil des arts et lettres de Québec and the Canada Council to teach the viol to professional baroque musicians. You’ll see some very familiar faces this evening, each musician brave enough to perform their first viol consort concert for you tonight!
Les Voix humaines foraged for instruments, finding enough to either rent or borrow to make this project possible. Many thanks to both McGill and the University of Montreal as well as several generous individuals for their loans. Re-stringing of instruments, repairs and re-hairing of bows all lead up to the start of distanced, masked lessons! Concerts planned were usurped by various pandemic lockdowns but tonight we present a wonderful concert of varied music from the 16th century.
